Cookie Policy
Last updated: August 30, 2026
This page explains what cookies are, which ones this site uses, and how to switch them off if you would rather not have them.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device when you visit a website. It lets the site remember things between pages and between visits — that you dismissed a notice, what your display preferences are, or that you have been here before. Cookies cannot run programs, carry viruses, or read anything else on your device.
Why we use them
We use cookies for three reasons: to make the site work properly, to understand which stories people read, and to fund the site through advertising.
The cookies on this site
Essential cookies. These are required for the website to function. They handle basic navigation, security, and remembering whether you have accepted our cookie notice. The site cannot work correctly without them, so they cannot be disabled through our settings — only through your browser.
Analytics cookies. We use Google Analytics to see how many people visit, which stories are read to the end, where readers come from, and which pages are slow or broken. This data is aggregated and is not used to identify individual readers. Typical lifespan is up to 24 months.
Advertising cookies. Advertising on this site is served by third parties including Google AdSense. These partners set cookies to select which advertisements to display, to limit how many times you see the same one, and to measure whether an advertisement was effective.
Google uses the DoubleClick DART cookie and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Third-party advertising vendors and ad networks may also set their own cookies. We do not control these cookies, and the data they collect is governed by each partner’s own privacy policy.
How to opt out of personalised advertising
You can turn off personalised advertising from Google through Google’s Ads Settings. You can opt out of many third-party vendor cookies through the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out tool or the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out page. Readers in Europe can use the Your Online Choices tool.
Opting out does not remove advertising from the site. It means the advertisements you see will be less relevant to you.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. In Chrome, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and other site data. In Firefox, Settings, then Privacy and Security. In Safari, Preferences, then Privacy. In Edge, Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.
You can also browse in private or incognito mode, which discards cookies when you close the window.
Please note that blocking all cookies may cause parts of this site, and many other sites, to behave unexpectedly.
Consent
Where required by law, we display a cookie notice on your first visit. Continuing to use the site after accepting that notice means you consent to the cookies described here. You can change your mind at any time using your browser controls.
Changes
If our use of cookies changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised.
